The Footprint Chronicles

Patagonia has created a website that demonstrates how clothing is created, and all of the places in the world where the product is made. I LOVE learning about how products are created, because so many people, strategies, and transportation are involved that can never be explained when you see a piece of clothing hanging in a store or a consumer product on a shelf. And the great thing is that the movies make no excuses for their actions, there is no radical leftist environmental propaganda permeating the little Youtube clips, they're just telling us really great stories, patagonia-style. Every company should have something like this!
Now if only their clothes actually fit me.....

My first Finished wearable knitting project!

I did it! Finished a project in a decent amount of time. I relearned how to knit and followed my first knitting pattern with a real gauge that can be worn/fitted on a human following a Tom Scott one-sleeved wrap from Vogue knitting magazine. My model is A., who looks so fabulous.
What is the next project? Hmm...

The window at New Deal Fish Market

I live across the street from New Deal Fish Market in Cambridge, MA. Last year, they were covered in a nice little article about Branzino in the Boston Globe. I finally noticed the shiny new framed article they hung on the wall above their freezer. I have also been noticing how many guys like to hang out here, buy fish, and chat with Carl about how to cook stuff. A few years ago, it felt like there were only Japanese people coming in here. All of these guys are totally convinced that they are the ONLY ones who know about New Deal, but can you believe, it's been around since 1928.
Just in case any of you who know this place, here is the fish display that they had yesterday! The swordfish was apparently 150 lbs!

Fashion and Technology

This week, I made it to Computational Couture, a party in the Museum of Science in Boston that just so happened to have a fashion show cruising down the escalators. It was supposed to demonstrate how technology can be wearable! But in the end, most designs demonstrated how technology can be attached to clothing for fun! I attended with some friends, one of whom could be considered an expert in this type of research and she had a terrific soap box rant for this event. She said something to the effect of: "Someone needs to come in and save the wearable technology industry, and it isn't going to be me. If you saw my clothing come down this runway, you wouldn't be able to tell what the technology is, but that's how it would be most useful- HIDDEN! Don't just use technology for the sake of technology, make it help something in your everyday life."


We also got to talking about our alma mater, Cornell, and some of the programs that we experienced there, including the Cornell Body Scanner Program. A 3D body scan is translated into a set of measurements that help dictate a clothing pattern! A quickie blurb from the PBS show "Design Squad" is here.

Knitting and finishing projects

I don't know where I found the time, but I started to relearn left handed knitting, and wanting to knit every single chance I get! I even finished a project that I abandoned a couple of years ago, and now I'm 1/3 way through a project I'm super excited about. I WILL finish it!

I also signed up to hang out on a social knitting website(!) called Ravelry, and it will help keep track of the yarn I own and the projects that I start. Hope I stick with this long enough to be able to start designing my own projects! I have a tendency to move on to another crafty/designy pursuit after a project is abandoned/finished. Which explains the enormous collection of craftsy craps in my apt. Oops. I guess in some ways, that's what winter is for.

I just found a really interesting quiz online by a financial guru named Brent Kessel. Take this quiz!!!
There are 8 financial archetypes that he's defined- "The Guardian," "The Pleasure Seeker," "The Idealist," "The Saver," "The Star," "The Innocent," "The Caretaker," "The Empire Builder." it's pretty neat to guess which one you are. If you know me, you might be able to figure out what archetype I am. I just found out about him from a little article called "The Yoga of Money" in the Kripalu Center catalog, which shows the schedule for the yoga retreat in Stockbridge, MA that one day I will visit along the way to Cornell. Too bad his book, "It's Not About the Money" won't be out until April 1st. I'm looking for an outlet to learn about Socially Responsible Investing....
